about

We have more in common with crows than we realize.

lyrics

The Crow

The winter of my father’s death
I cried out in his empty room,
And when I was out of breath
A friend consoled me in my gloom:

"Let him go in peace, my friend,
He will fly as he never flew,
Every lifetime has to end,
He will be a part of you."

Two years since my father died,
In the melt of a heavy snow
I heard a caw-cawing outside,
Through the pane, I saw a crow,

His coal silhouette in my crab tree,
Breath like smoke in the chilly air,
The cause of this cacophony:
Another crow was fallen there,

Below, with the grass entwined,
Made flat by snow before the thaw,
What was left of his kind,
A mat of beak, feathers, and claw.

Let him go in peace, my friend,
He will fly as he never flew,
Every lifetime has to end,
He will be a part of you.

The crow glided to the ground,
With his bill he touched the dead,
Caressing it, now without sound,
He coaxed the feather tips to spread.

Oh Crow, make this place your perch,
Your friend I’ll bury beneath this tree,
Be welcome to keep your watch
Over both your friend and me.

Let him go in peace, my friend,
He will fly as he never flew,
Every lifetime has to end,
He will be a part of you.

He will be a part of you,
He will be a part of you.
